Kathy Gregg Females in FunTeam Bursary
Kathy Gregg has been an important member in FunTeam Alberta’s history in bringing low cost, family oriented, inclusive and fun sports programs for Alberta’s youth. She has been a member of FunTeam Alberta’s Board for 30+ years. It is her goal with this bursary to support young females in their journey to excel in sport for those that participated in FunTeam programs by removing barriers to further their opportunity in sport and achieve their goals in sport beyond FunTeam.
FunTeam Alberta would like to thank the support of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation with their support in helping fund this initiative.
Kathy Gregg's History in Sport
Kathy Gregg (formerly Kathleen Vogt) grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she was an energetic and dedicated young athlete. She excelled in a variety of sports but focused primarily on speed skating in the winter and fastball in the summer. Her talent and determination led her to compete in fastball at the Canada Summer Games in 1977.
Remarkably, at just 16 years old, Kathy earned a spot on Canada’s Olympic speed skating team and represented her country at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Beyond her own athletic accomplishments, she always dedicated time to coaching and mentoring younger athletes, becoming a respected role model for young women in sport. | ![]() |
Kathy continued her Olympic journey at the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York, where she met her future husband, Randy Gregg. Together, they raised four children and became passionate advocates for accessible, community-based youth sports. This shared commitment led to the founding of FunTeam Alberta in 1990, a grassroots initiative focused on making sports fun, inclusive, and affordable for all children. Kathy has played a pivotal role in FunTeam's growth and impact since its inception.
Kathy earned a degree in Education from the University of Alberta and enjoyed a rewarding 22-year career as an elementary school teacher. Alongside her teaching, she continued to coach her children and many others in a wide range of sports, including ringette, fastball, speed skating, track and field, and volleyball. From learn-to-skate programs to coaching elite provincial athletes, Kathy’s dedication to nurturing young athletes has been a constant in her life.
A passionate advocate for youth sport, Kathy strongly believes in keeping sports fun, inclusive, and accessible—particularly for young females. She is committed to ensuring that every young female athlete has the opportunity to thrive and enjoy the sports they love without barriers.
This bursary is a testament to Kathy’s lifelong commitment to empowering young women through sport, and to building a community where every child can participate, grow, and succeed.
