Introducing FunTeam’s New Promotional Materials
Last year FunTeam partnered up with the Graphic Communications Department (GCD) at NAIT to spruce up FunTeam’s promotional materials. Each student created a promotional package with their own creative spin on FunTeam. After a difficult decision, a new design was chosen. FunTeam Alberta would like to thank student designer, Amie Chaottakoongite, for the exciting new look of FunTeam’s promotional materials. A special thank you also goes out to Carmen Schnirer and Norm Peterson of NAIT’s GCD for taking on this project. These brochures and posters are available to FunTeam group leaders and members upon request for display in your communities.

Do you remember why you first Do you remember why you first joined FunTeam? Or what it means to you to be a part of FunTeam/RecTeam? Nicky Sereda, Group Leader of Drumheller FunTeam/RecTeam Hockey shares his personal journey to FunTeam.

Our family is no stranger to the words volunteer and sports. I began helping my Dad coach little league baseball over 40 years ago. I really liked baseball but unfortunately was not a very good player and as a result had learned how to sit on the bench for a number of years, as it was all about winning in those days. At first, that is how I approached coaching “win at all costs”, then it hit me and the memories came back at how I felt about having to sit on the bench because I wasn’t good enough. A few years later Dad let me take over the reins of coaching, by then I was in high school and soon after off to university where I was able to take some coaching courses. I continued to coach over the years and continued to learn not only from courses and books but from the many coaches I met along the way. Then came the day I was able to coach our own children. Darlene (Nicky’s wife) & I were blessed with four boys. At a young age they all wanted to play baseball and hockey. I had never coached hockey, so I decided to volunteer. For nine years Darlene and I spent a lot of time at the local rink as I learned the game of hockey with our boys. Click here to continue reading.

2010 Sereda FunTeam Hockey Event Grant Recipients
FunTeam Alberta was proud to award the 2010 Sereda FunTeam Hockey Event Grant to the Calgary AfterSchool (CAS) Program. The CAS program was designed for young people, particularly youth ages 11-15, to do better in school, learn new skills and stay healthy and active. CAS programs promote productive, safe after-school activities that build social, physical, leadership and creative skills. On March 18, 2011 CAS held a recreational floor hockey tournament at Lester B Pearson School. The tournament was designed to introduce hockey to youth who may have never played, build leadership skills, social skills, and improve self esteem. Other youth who might not want to play were encouraged to get involved by designing jerseys, banners, etc for their team. After the hockey tournament an awards ceremony (based on sportsmanship and fair play) was held at Village Square Leisure Centre. FunTeam Alberta is proud to support such a positive event and wish CAS the best of luck.

The namesake of this grant comes from the Drumheller FunTeam Group. Since 1994, group leader Nicky Sereda, has dedicated his time to providing less competitive and low cost sporting opportunities. In 2005, Nicky was recognized by the RBC Local Hockey Leader program. This program recognizes community leaders from across Canada that have dedicated their time to supporting grassroots hockey. Nicky generously donated a portion of the funds from this award to FunTeam Alberta. It was from this that FunTeam created the Sereda FunTeam Hockey Event Grant. FunTeam Alberta awards up to $400 annually to a local community/organization in the Province of Alberta who is interested in coordinating a recreational hockey event for their local youth. For more information and for the grant application click here.
The Summer FunTeam Family Try-athlon season is now underway and the FunTeam office is currently accepting grant applications from interested parties. A FunTeam Family Try-athlon is similar to a triathlon, but a Try-athlon is an experience that anyone can participate in. This is a non-competitive, fun way for families, schools and communities across Alberta to get active together. FunTeam is pleased to support community volunteers by alleviating many of the organizational challenges. FunTeam will provide a $500.00 grant, Gatorade jugs, advertising and promotional material, a local draw for $100 M&M Meat Shops gift card and a chance for participants to win a family vacation for 4! For more information on this program click here.
Not too sure what type of response you’ll receive and what to expect with a full Try-athlon, why not test out the waters with a Mini Try-athlon? FunTeam will provide you with a $75 subsidy for snacks, colourful posters, equipment and all of the resources and tools you’d need to run this event. Over 40 stations to choose from! Click here for more information.

The FunTeam Alberta Board of Directors was so impressed with the steps that Morinville and Drumheller are taking to enhance their FunTeam groups, keep participation costs low and ensure their programs are accessible that FunTeam felt both groups were deserving and worthy. Casino Fundraiser
FunTeam Alberta is pleased to announce our upcoming casino fundraiser on Thursday & Friday, January 13th & 14th, 2011 at the Baccarat Casino in Edmonton. This is an incredible opportunity for FunTeam Alberta and we could not be more excited. Profits from this casino fundraiser allow us to continue to reach and support communities all across Alberta and also help to cover a great deal of the operational costs of running FunTeam.

It is crucial that we find enough volunteers for this event, or we could be at risk of losing it. We are in need of 28 volunteers to fill both day and evening shifts. Day shifts are approximately 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and night shifts are approximately 7:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or older and will receive a meal in thanks for their time. If you've never worked a casino before, don't worry the work is easy and training is provided. For more information on the positions please see the AGLC website.

Get together with a friend and sign up knowing that you're playing a large role in FunTeam Alberta by allowing us to continue to provide children, youth and adults all across Alberta low cost and less competitive sporting opportunities. Please contact the FunTeam Alberta office if you are available to help out. The deadline to sign up is November 5th, 2010.

As many of you may have read in the newspaper; on Tuesday July 29 2008 The Mayerthorpe town arena was destroyed by fire when a massive blaze ripped through the structure. The Mayerthorpe arena was 36 years old and had become the focal point of the town in recent years, providing fun and recreation. The arena was a crucial component in the town's charity hockey games to raise funds towards the Fallen Four Memorial. In addition, it was also home of the annual rodeo. Luckily no one was in the building at the time of the fire.

The Mayerthorpe arena was also used by our very own Mayerthorpe FunTeam Hockey, where they had a locker used to store goalie equipment. Unfortunately this equipment was also decimated in the fire. However, through a wonderful charitable organization "The Brick Sport Central" who donated both small and large goalie equipment , their program has been salvaged. The Barrhead community has also provided support by allowing Mayerthorpe to share their recreation centre. FunTeam Alberta would like to thank both Sports Central and the Barrhead community for their generosity and kindness during this time. Without their support FunTeam hockey may have had to be cancelled this year. Thanks again to Sport Central, and the town of Barrhead for helping make this season possible.
